Oriental Cockroach
Dark brown to black, about 1 inch. Slow-moving and prefers very damp, cool areas — drains, basements, and crawl spaces. Often found in apartments and older homes in Indiana.
Blatta orientalis
Brown-Banded Cockroach
Small (½ inch), brown with two lighter bands across wings. Unlike German cockroaches, they scatter throughout the home — in bedrooms, living areas, and furniture — not just kitchens and baths.

Cockroaches are nocturnal and expert hiders. By the time you see one during the day, the population is often already large. Watch for these early warning signs:
- →Droppings: Dark specks resembling coffee grounds or black pepper near food storage, under appliances, and in cabinet corners.
- →Egg cases (oothecae): Oval, dark brown cases about 8mm long found behind appliances, in cabinet cracks, and under sinks.
- →Musty oily odor: A distinctive unpleasant smell that intensifies with large populations — often described as musty or oily.
- →Grease smears: Brown smear marks along walls, baseboards, and edges where cockroaches repeatedly travel.
- →Daytime sightings: Seeing cockroaches during the day is a sign of a large, overcrowded population. German cockroaches normally only come out at night.

Why do I keep seeing cockroaches after treatment?
It's normal to see increased cockroach activity for 1–2 weeks after treatment as cockroaches are disturbed and seek new harborage. How do I prevent cockroaches from coming back?
Prevention includes keeping kitchens clean (no crumbs, no grease buildup), storing food in sealed containers, fixing leaky pipes and eliminating moisture sources, sealing gaps around pipes and baseboards, and not bringing in secondhand appliances without inspecting them.
