Very small (nymph: poppy seed size), orange-brown body with black legs. Primary carrier of Lyme disease. Active in spring and early summer, and again in fall. Found in wooded areas, brush, and tall grass throughout Indiana.
American Dog Tick
Larger brown tick with white markings. Can transmit Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and tularemia. Most active in spring and summer. Found in grassy areas and along trails. The most common tick on pets in Indiana.
Lone Star Tick
Reddish-brown with a distinctive white spot on females. Aggressive feeder. Can transmit ehrlichiosis and STARI. Expanding its range northward into Indiana — increasingly found in southern and central Indiana.
When Are Ticks Active?
Deer ticks peak in spring (April–June) and fall (October–November). Dog ticks peak in spring and summer. Ticks remain active whenever temperatures are above freezing — in warm winters, adult deer ticks can be found through December.
